Beauty Of Savlya Ghat

Savlya Ghat—this name is everywhere among nature lovers and adventure seekers in 2024. Known for its mesmerizing views, along with stunning waterfalls, this place feels like heaven on Earth. In 2024, it became the most trending destination in Maharashtra. Every year, hidden gems in the Tamhini Ghat region are discovered and quickly go viral—just like Kundalika Valley, Plus Valley, Ring Waterfall, and Milkybar Waterfall did in previous years. Sometimes, I wonder how many more hidden gems lie in the Sahyadris—the more you explore, the deeper you fall in love with these mountains and their treasures.

This year, Savlya Ghat captured the hearts of trekkers and nature lovers alike. Everyone wanted to visit this gem. Also known as the “Devkund Waterfall View Point” and “Savlya Ghat View Point,” Savlya Ghat offers breathtaking views of the Devkund Waterfall, Plus Valley, and more. Located in the Mulshi region near Pune, this place is perfect for those looking to escape their daily grind and explore something untouched. If you haven’t visited it yet, don’t worry—I’ll take you through my experience in this blog.

Savlya Ghat history

Though Savlya Ghat has recently gained popularity, its historical significance dates back 200-300 years. This ghat was a crucial route for travelers and traders, connecting Mulshi (Pune) to the Konkan region. People used this path for business, importing, and exporting goods. The journey would typically begin from Bhire village in the Konkan and end at Parate village, Mulshi. Along the route, you can still see four rock-cut water tanks and 32 ancient rock-cut stairs carved into the mountains, reminding us of the challenges people faced while crossing dense jungles, steep paths, and slippery stairs to transport goods.

To keep an eye on this route, forts like Surgad near Kolad and Kailasgad in Mulshi were strategically built. These forts played a significant role in overseeing the trade activities and ensuring the safety of the travelers. Even today, locals residing near the top of Savlya Ghat use this historic route to descend to their base village, continuing a tradition that has endured through the centuries.

The Excitement Begins

Like many others, I was curious about Savlya Ghat after seeing hundreds of videos on Instagram and YouTube. The breathtaking beauty of this location excited me, and I was eager to experience it for myself. Unfortunately, none of my friends were available to join me as everyone was busy with their lives. Then, out of the blue, my new friend Shailesh, whom I met during a trek to Raireshwar, called me to share his plan to visit Savlya Ghat that weekend. Without letting him finish his sentence, I exclaimed, “I’m coming!”

As planned, we started our journey early Saturday morning at 4:30 AM from Pune Mahanagar Palika, our meeting point. I parked my bike there, and it was just the two of us initially. Along the way, Shailesh mentioned that his office seniors would be joining us at Chandni Chowk, so we headed there to meet them. After introductions, we continued our journey toward Savlya Ghat.

The Journey Through Tamhini Ghat

Tamhini Ghat Route

After about an hour of riding, we reached the Mulshi area, where heavy rain suddenly started. The raindrops felt like small stones due to their size, and the strong winds made it difficult to see while riding. We had to stop for a while until the rain eased up. Once it slowed down, we resumed our journey, and the famous Tamhini Ghat lay ahead of us. It looked like a scene from heaven during the monsoon—lush greenery, flowing waterfalls, small channels, and fog-covered mountains. What more could any travel lover want? Tamhini Ghat had everything to help you forget your worries and simply enjoy life.

Soon, we reached “Hotel Jai Malhar,” where we stopped for breakfast. We relished hot poha and chai, charging up for the rest of our journey. After breakfast, we took the right turn from Jai Malhar Hotel toward Kundalika Valley. From bus stand we took the right turn which route leading us to Parate Wasti which serves as the base village and the starting point of the Savlya Ghat trek.

We parked our bikes in front of a local village house. With the growing popularity of Savlya Ghat, the local villagers had found a new source of income by providing parking facilities and snacks or lunch at reasonable prices compared to other locations. Since we had already eaten breakfast, we just parked our vehicles, took a selfie, and set off on our journey toward Savlya Ghat.

The Savlya Ghat Trek Begins

As we started the trek, the entire village and surrounding area were covered in fog, making it hard to see the clear route. Initially, I thought Shailesh knew the way, but it didn’t take long to realize we were lost. He had watched some YouTube videos and led us in a direction that soon became a dead end. From that point, we could clearly see the Kundalika Valley, which was an awesome sight. Someone remarked, “Sometimes you find the right path after going the wrong way.”

Not knowing where to go, we decided to head back to the base village, having lost about an hour in the process. We asked the locals for guidance, but they quoted ₹1000 for their services. Just then, a group of 12-15 trekkers arrived, all heading to Savlya Ghat. Instead of hiring a local guide, we opted to follow this group.

Orange Ribbon

A couple of people in the group suggested that we keep an eye out for the “orange ribbon” trail markers tied by a YouTuber named Prashil, who had done this to help guide other trekkers through this confusing route.

This unexpected adventure became a fun treasure hunt. Someone would shout, “I found the ribbon!” while others searched for the next one. It felt funny but was also a unique experience. Along the way, I met a lot of interesting people and had discussions about this beautiful location

The trek was full of surprises. We crossed small streams, saw land being cleared, possibly for someone building a farmhouse or resort, and found ancient rock-cut water tanks, likely used by traders centuries ago. As we continued, we encountered a particularly steep and slippery section. The rain and wind made it challenging to descend, but slowly we made our way down.

We reached a rock-cut water tank, which seemed to have served as a resting point for travelers in ancient times before continuing their journey. Further along, we came across a steep set of rock-cut stairs that were quite slippery.

One of the boys caught a small crab and jokingly quoted Bear Grylls, saying, “This tiny crab won’t fill my hunger, but it’s packed with protein for the journey ahead.” We all laughed and took pictures of the crab.

As we descended further into a thick jungle, the atmosphere changed to something strange yet exciting. The sound of the rain and wind, combined with the rustling of leaves, enhanced the experience. After trekking for 1.5 hours through the steep, slippery paths and rock-cut stairs, we finally reached the Savlya Ghat viewpoint.

A Glimpse of Heaven at Savlya Ghat

Cloudy views at Savlya Ghat! ☁️🌿

The entire viewpoint was covered in clouds, and we couldn’t see anything. It felt like we had climbed up into the clouds themselves, surrounded by a thick, misty blanket. The world around us seemed hidden, with only the cool breeze and the sound of silence to accompany us at the top.

Coffee tastes better when shared with new friends on an adventure

We were enjoying the misty surroundings when Shailesh suddenly mentioned that he had brought hot milk in a thermos and coffee sachets. “Why wait?” I said, and without any delay, we made some hot coffee and we enjoyed it, which was perfect for the rainy, foggy weather. Holding a warm cup of coffee while surrounded by mist was just what we needed.

Within moments, the fog began to lift, revealing the breathtaking view of Savlya Ghat. What I saw then is hard to describe in words. I felt frozen in that moment because the view felt like heaven to me. The roaring waterfalls, majestic Sahyadri mountains, and the peaceful Bhena Dam were all visible, along with a clear view of the Devkund Waterfall. It was a sight more beautiful than anything I had ever seen in my life.

We took some pictures as the fog and the Sahyadri mountains played a game of hide-and-seek, sometimes revealing their beauty and sometimes cloaking it again. We sat there for almost an hour, soaking in the breathtaking views and enjoying nature’s game.

The Return Journey

Soon, heavy rain began, making it difficult to see anything, so we decided to start our descent. I quickly realized that the return journey was more challenging than the trek up. Initially, during the trek, we were just descending the mountains and crossing the dense, steep jungle, but now, on the return journey, we had to ascend again. We fashioned makeshift walking sticks from branches to help with the climb, which turned out to be very helpful.

After several ups and downs, we finally made it back to the base village, where we had parked our bikes. Exhausted and hungry, we decided to cover some distance before stopping for lunch.

We rode to Jogeshwary Misal in Mulshi, where we enjoyed some delicious misal pav. The spicy dish tasted even better after our rainy adventure.

We even ordered some tea while we waited for the rain to stop, which added to the experience. After saying goodbye to my new friends Bharat and Saurabh at Chandni Chowk, expressing that I hoped we would meet again for another adventure soon. I returned home with memories that will last a lifetime.
