Did you know that Mumbai has a natural wonder that is 66 million years old?

Yes, something that existed before the dinosaurs disappeared from Earth is still standing today in the middle of the busy city of Mumbai. And surprisingly, many people living in the city still don’t know about it.

Even after living for almost one year in Mumbai, I had never heard about one of the most unique natural wonders hidden inside the city. Yes, I am talking about Gilbert Hill.

Just imagine a massive rock hill standing right in the middle of a crowded city. Cars passing by, buildings everywhere, people rushing for work — and in between all of this stands a natural structure that was formed around 66 million years ago due to intense volcanic activity.

That means this hill existed even before the dinosaur era ended. When dinosaurs disappeared from Earth, the volcanic activity that shaped parts of India created this huge basalt rock formation. Thinking about that while standing in the middle of Mumbai traffic feels almost unreal. 🤯

What makes this hill even more special is that formations like this are extremely rare in the world. In fact, there are only three such formations known globally. One is Devils Tower National Monument, another is Devils Postpile National Monument near Mammoth Lakes, and the third one is right here in Andheri, Mumbai.

Yes, something this rare exists in our own city.

So let me take you 66 million years back and begin our travel journey to Gilbert Hill. 🌍

History of Gilbert Hill

Gilbert Hill, Mumbai

Gilbert Hill is a 200-foot-tall monolithic column of black basalt rock that rises dramatically in the middle of the city. This massive rock structure was formed when molten lava erupted from the earth around 66 million years ago and slowly cooled down over time.

When lava cools slowly, it can create vertical hexagonal rock columns. These natural formations are known as columnar basalt structures, and they are considered extremely rare geological wonders found in only a few places around the world.

Gilbert Hill was formed during the same ancient volcanic activity that created the famous Deccan Traps in India. These volcanic eruptions shaped large parts of the Indian subcontinent millions of years ago.

Because of its scientific and geological importance, Gilbert Hill was declared a Monument of National Importance in 1952. For geologists and researchers, this hill is an important natural formation that helps scientists understand Earth’s volcanic history and how such rock structures were formed.

Unfortunately, over the years rapid urban development has surrounded the hill with buildings and construction. Because of this, many people living in Mumbai still don’t know that such a rare geological wonder exists right in the middle of their own city.

Even today, Gilbert Hill stands quietly among the crowded streets, reminding us of a 66-million-year-old chapter of Earth’s history. 🌍

A Random Weekend Plan

That weekend I was not travelling to Pune and was staying back in Mumbai. Like most people on a lazy weekend, I was simply scrolling through my phone, looking for some interesting places to explore nearby.

And that’s when I came across Gilbert Hill.

At first, I thought it was just another small hill in Mumbai. But the moment I read that this hill was 66 million years old, my curiosity instantly kicked in.

Just imagine… something that old, standing right in the middle of a busy modern city like Mumbai.

That was enough to convince me that this Sunday needed to be different. I decided that I had to visit this place.

So I turned to my roommate Gautam and asked,
Bro, are you coming with me?”

And without even thinking for a second, he simply said yes.

No overthinking.
No complicated planning.
Just a simple Yes, let’s go.”

And honestly, that’s exactly the kind of friend every traveller needs. Someone who is always ready for a random adventure. 😄

The Ride to Gilbert Hill

According to our plan, we started our journey around 1 PM.

Since we were not familiar with the route, we simply opened Google Maps, started the bike, and began riding towards Gilbert Hill. The distance from our room was only about 4 km, which normally should not take much time. But this is Mumbaia city where even a short distance can sometimes turn into a long ride because of traffic signals, crowded roads, and endless vehicles. As we moved through the busy streets of Andheri, crossing multiple lanes and slowly navigating through traffic, the city felt exactly the way Mumbai always does — fast, noisy, and full of life.

After around 30 minutes of riding, we finally reached Gilbert Hill. But the moment I saw the place, the first thought that came to my mind was honestly a bit disappointing. For a moment, I felt like maybe we don’t truly realise the value of such natural monuments in our country. Just imagine — one of the rarest geological structures in the world, standing right here in Mumbai, and yet buildings have been constructed extremely close to it.

There was no proper information board explaining its history, no clear explanation about how rare this formation actually is. From the outside, it almost looked like just another hill surrounded by buildings. For a place that holds 66 million years of Earth’s history, it definitely deserved better care, better preservation, and better presentation.

Standing there, I couldn’t help but think that such a rare natural wonder should be celebrated more, not hidden between buildings.

Another Disappointment – The Gate Was Closed

Gaondevi Mandir Gate

After reaching the location, we walked towards the entrance gate that leads to the top of Gilbert Hill.

And guess what?

The gate was closed.

From outside we could clearly see the massive rock structure and the temple standing on top of the hill, but since the gate was locked, it felt like our trip might end right there. At the top of Gilbert Hill is a well-known temple called Gaondevi Temple, a sacred place where many local devotees come for darshan. But with the gate locked, there was nothing much we could do.

So Gautam and I just sat there quietly for a few minutes, wondering whether we should wait for some time or simply head back home. For a moment, it felt a little disappointing. After coming all the way to see a 66-million-year-old natural wonder, we might not even get the chance to go up.

Just when we were about to leave, something unexpected happened.

The caretaker arrived at the gate.

He unlocked it and said,
I am opening the gate for 10 minutes. Go quickly and come back.”

At that exact moment, Gautam and I looked at each other and burst into laughter.

Because deep down we both felt the same thing —

It felt like Gaondevi Mata didn’t want us to leave without darshan. 🙏

And just like that, our trip suddenly became much more exciting.

Climbing the Steps 👣

Without wasting any time, we quickly entered through the gate and started climbing the stairs leading to the top of Gilbert Hill.

There are roughly 150 to 200 steps that take you to the summit. As we began climbing, the massive basalt rock wall stood right beside us, rising straight up towards the sky.

The closer we went, the more impressive and powerful the structure looked.

It was hard to believe that this giant rock formation was created by volcanic activity around 66 million years ago. Standing so close to it felt like we were touching a small piece of Earth’s ancient history.

With every few steps, the surroundings slowly started to open up. Soon we began to see the aerial view of Andheri and the nearby parts of Mumbai.

From above, the city looked completely different — buildings stretching in every direction, busy roads, and the constant movement of Mumbai life.

And right in the middle of all this modern chaos stood Gilbert Hill, a silent witness of millions of years of Earth’s geological history.

Standing next to 200foot volcanic rock structure formed millions of years ago was truly fascinating and unforgettable feeling.

For moment, we both just paused, looked around, and silently appreciated how incredible nature can be.

Taking Blessings at the Temple❤️

At the top of Gilbert Hill stands the peaceful and sacred Gaondevi Temple.

After reaching the summit, we quietly removed our shoes and walked inside the temple.

The atmosphere at the top felt completely different from the busy city below. Despite being surrounded by crowded Mumbai, the temple area felt calm, peaceful, and spiritual.

Gautam was clearly very excited. The moment he entered the temple, he immediately rang the temple bell, and the sound echoed around the hill. 🔔

The happiness on his face was impossible to miss. 😄

Inside the temple, we offered our prayers and took the blessings of Gaondevi Mata. The temple also has beautiful idols of Lord Ganesh and Durga Mata, which added to the spiritual atmosphere of the place.

Just a short distance away, there is also a small Hanuman temple.

What makes this temple truly unique is something very special — a huge tree grows through the temple structure itself.

The temple has actually been built around the tree, and the thick trunk of the tree passes through the roof of the temple and continues to grow upwards.

It was a beautiful and rare sight, where nature and devotion exist together in harmony.

Standing there, it felt like the place had its own peaceful energy, far away from the chaos of the city below.

The 360-Degree View of Mumbai

gilbert hill

After taking the blessings of Gaondevi Mata, we stepped outside the temple and slowly walked around to enjoy the 360-degree view from the top of Gilbert Hill.

And honestly, the view was quite fascinating.

From one side, you can see the tall modern buildings of Mumbai, rising high and almost touching the sky. The skyline looked busy and energetic, just like the city itself.

But when you turn to the other side, the scene changes completely.

There you can see densely packed slum areas, with small houses built very close to each other.

That contrast itself tells the real story of Mumbai.

A city where luxury apartments and simple homes exist side by side. Different lifestyles, different struggles, different dreams — all living together in the same place.

And that is what makes Mumbai truly unique.

Interestingly, sometimes a person living in those small houses might still be earning well and living a happy life. In Mumbai, appearances can often be misleading.

This city works in its own mysterious ways. 😄

Standing there on top of a 66-million-year-old volcanic rock, looking at the endless spread of Mumbai, felt like watching two different worlds from a single viewpoint.

It was one of those moments where you simply pause, observe, and appreciate the incredible diversity of this city.

A Thought About Preservation

While standing there and observing the surroundings, one thought kept coming back to my mind.

A natural monument as rare as Gilbert Hill could have been protected and preserved much better.

Over the years, buildings have been constructed very close to the hill, leaving very little open space around this ancient rock formation. Because of nearby excavation and construction activities, rocks from the hill have reportedly fallen in the past, which raised safety concerns.

To reduce the risk of accidents, large metal safety nets have been installed around the hill to catch any falling rocks.

While these measures help in preventing accidents, they also remind us that the real issue lies in the uncontrolled development around the monument.

It makes you wonder — when we have something that is 66 million years old and extremely rare, shouldn’t we be doing everything possible to protect it properly?

Perhaps with better planning, Gilbert Hill could have been developed as a major geological attraction, with proper information boards, viewing areas, and preservation zones.

Still, despite all these challenges, Gilbert Hill continues to stand strong, quietly telling the story of millions of years of Earth’s history.

And that alone makes it a fascinating and unique place to visit in Mumbai.

A Funny Moment While Coming Down

gilbert hill

After spending some time at the top, enjoying the beautiful views of Mumbai and the peaceful atmosphere around the temple, we finally decided it was time to head back down. So we slowly started descending the stairs of Gilbert Hill. The climb up was exciting, but coming down felt even more relaxing. The cool breeze, the quiet surroundings, and the sight of the massive basalt rock beside the stairs made the walk down quite enjoyable.

But just when we thought the adventure was over, another funny moment was waiting for us. When we reached the main gate, we noticed something unexpected.

The gate was closed again…

And the caretaker was nowhere to be seen. For a few seconds Gautam and I just looked at each other, confused.

Then one of us said,

Bro… did he forget that we are still on the hill?” 😅

For a moment we genuinely wondered if we were going to be stuck inside Gilbert Hill. Luckily, after waiting for a little while, the caretaker finally came back and opened the gate.

The moment the gate opened, we all started laughing at the situation.

Sometimes these small and unexpected moments are the ones that make a trip even more memorable.

And this was definitely one of those moments we would remember for a long time.

An Unexpected Bhandara Experience

gilbert hill

While we were talking with the caretaker, Gautam casually asked him a question.

Is there any bhandara happening here today?”

The caretaker smiled and told us that on the terrace of a nearby community hall close to the temple, a bhandara was being served. He was kind enough to personally take us there. When we reached, we found out that the bhandara was actually arranged for a group of devotees who were walking on foot to Shirdi for their pilgrimage.

Even though the food was meant for them, the people there warmly welcomed us and asked us to sit and eat with them. We had not planned to eat anything there, but somehow it felt like everything happened naturally.

Because we had visited the temple, it felt like we had received both blessings and food. 🙏🍛

What made the moment even more special was the kindness of those people. They treated us like we were part of their group and even invited us to come back again in the evening for another bhandara. Moments like these remind us that travel is not just about visiting places.

Sometimes the unexpected kindness of strangers becomes the most memorable part of the journey.

After spending some time there, thanking everyone for their hospitality, we finally said goodbye and started our return journey, carrying with us beautiful memories from this small but unforgettable trip to Gilbert Hill.

Final Thoughts

Gilbert Hill is not just a hill. It is a piece of Earth’s ancient history standing quietly in the middle of a busy and ever-moving city like Mumbai. Sometimes we travel far away searching for unique and extraordinary places, but the truth is that many hidden wonders exist much closer to us than we realize.

What started as a simple Sunday plan turned into a memorable little adventurefilled with ancient history, temple blessings, unexpected kindness, and a beautiful view of Mumbai from the top. Trips like these remind us that travel does not always need long distances or big plans. Sometimes, the most meaningful journeys are the small spontaneous ones.
